Tedros Adhanom, who has a doctorate in community health, is the first African and non-physician serve as the WHO Director-General.of the World Health Organization. However, his attitude towards China and the pandemic was criticized by various countries, and US President Donald Trump announced that he would interrupt financial support for the WHO. Tedros Adhanom was the former Minister of Health and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia. He is also an important member of the left-wing Ethiopia political party “Tigray People’s Liberation Front” (TPLF). The United States government has classified the part as a terrorist organization in the 1900s.
in 1974, military leader, Mengistu Haile Mariam overthrew the monarchy, established a left-wing military government, and implemented an iron-fisted ruling. TPLF was first established in 1975. In the beginning, it was a small guerrilla group, based in Tigray, the northern region of Egypt, and strived to establish the “Republic of Tigray.” Back up by the idea of change and reform, the Tigray party become the main opposition force in the 1980s. It successfully joins forces with other ethnic factions to form the “Ethiopian People ’s Revolutionary Democratic Front”, which seized power in 1991.
However, due to the Tigrayans only account for 6% of the country’s population, so put the PFLP also pursuing a reign of terror, arresting dissidents and occupy the land of the largest Oromo ethnic group. In 2005, “Human Rights Watch” report strongly criticized that the Tigray party had committed various human rights crimes when in power.
In the 1990s, the United States once classified the Tigray party as a terrorist organization, and it is still listed in the University of Maryland’s Global Terrorism Database. After years of civil warfare, it was not until 2018 that the Ethiopian People ’s Revolutionary Democratic Front was reshuffled and no longer controlled by the PFLP. Abiy Ahmed of the Oromo Democratic Party took over as prime minister, underwent a drastic political reform, released thousands of political prisoners and won himself the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019.
Tedros Adhanom was raised in the Tigray area. Shortly after the fall of Mengistu in 1991, he went to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to study for a master’s degree in immunology. In 2000, he completed a doctorate in community health at Nottingham University. Because of his education and Tigray ’s growth background, he immediately became the head of the Tigray District Health Bureau in 2001 and became the Minister of Health in 2005. Tan Desai was just 40 years old that year, and he was still the first non-physician as the country Minister of Health. When Tedros run for the post of Director-General, it was revealed that he concealed the cholera disaster in the Oromo region three times (2006, 2009 and 2011), resulting in hundreds of deaths.
In 2013, French media, The Africa Report named Tedros as one of the powerful leaders for TPLF. During his four years as Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was also the most intense phase of the Oromo uprising. Since the demonstrations in 2014, in exchange for the government violent suppression and result in thousands of death. When Tedros was elected as the Director-General of the World Health Organization, he was still a member of the Politburo of the People’s Liberation Front a the same time enjoying a great party and government power. In 2018, local media, Kichuu News criticized Tedros for ignoring the deaths of millions of persecuted Oromos. He was responsible for the government’s murder, torture and excessive arrests. Fortunately, Ethiopia is currently controlled by the Oromo Democratic Party and is considered an against force with Tedros. At the same time, Tandse ’s WHO future still depends on the “China Factor”.
